Sri Lanka to grow NR in non-traditional areas |

The Ministry of Plantation Industry, Government of Sri Lanka, has taken measures to expand rubber cultivation in non-traditional rubber plantation areas in order to meet the increasing demand for rubber in the world market. Minister of Plantation Industries Mahinda Samarasinghe said the Rubber Research Institute od Sri Lanka has found the soil and environment in non-traditional areas like the Mulaitivu and Vavuniya suitable for rubber cultivation. At present Sri Lanka produces about 150,000 tonnes of rubber and it is necessary to increase production by at least another 50,000 tonnes to meet the global demand, he said.
